Chapter Eight

We both were laughing when Delilah came back into the small cave, stomping snow off her clothes in the entrance.

“The horses are fine,” she said, “better than we are. They managed to dig free a patch of grass and ate their fill.” She came over and took a seat by the fire, breathing out a deep sigh, “We’re ok on water, with all that snow and John’s canteen, but we could use some food. I’m starving.”

“Me too,” I said, “but we can survive a couple days without a meal if we have to. I’ll go out this evening and see if I can hunt up something close by.”

We sat in silence for a long moment, staring into the flames as the storm raged outside.

“What was it like growing up in Mexico and then going to a boarding school?” Delilah asked.

Jasmine spoke of growing up in Mexico with her grandmother in a small village. Her fondest memories were of working the farm and exploring the lands around their place. Then in her early years, her mother had sent for her. The girl had spent months learning English as she traveled by carriage to the east coast. The boarding school had been cold and remote at first, the girls even more so. Over the years, she’d found her place, working in the library and reading in her every waking hour.

“If I could spend my life lost in a world of words, I would count it well lived,” Jasmine said. “I know it’s silly, but wondering where I might be able to get new books out here in the mountains has been my biggest worry.”

“Momma has a trunk full of dusty old books,” Delilah said, “don’t worry about that. If you manage to make it through them, she’ll get another one out here for you. She’s been trying to make me a reader my whole life, but all I wanted to do was run outside and play with the animals.”

“A whole trunk, you say?” Jasmine asked with more than passing curiosity, “Tell me about your mother, and what it was like growing up back east for you.”

“Momma has always been the center of attention,” Delilah said, “even when I was a girl, and she never liked it. Aunt Esther says that’s the price you have to pay when you’re prettier and smarter than everyone else. I was never comfortable there, too many people, too many buildings, too few trees, and open spaces. There were a few years where… it was tough going for us.”

Jasmine and I sat in silence as Delilah talked about years of struggle. Money was tight, and food was often an issue, making things worse were the women of their town. Most were jealous of Grace’s great beauty and of their husband's lingering stares. They made life hell for the gorgeous brunette, and the women’s husbands didn’t make it any easier. They all knew it was only a matter of time before something terrible happened.

“It was one of our first nights on the prairie,” Delilah said with a shy smile.
